|ENGH 346 - Blogs, Tweets, & Social Media|
From a grounding in rhetoric and discourse community theory, this course will explore the relationship between audience, purpose and text in a cross section of electronic formats, including tweets, blogs, websites, and various social media and curation sites. Students will develop criteria for evaluating each form of writing, find examples, and assess what makes them effective (including questions of ethics and responsibility). They will also consider the ways individuals and organizations use social media to create and maintain their brand and reach specific audiences. Using these skills, students will shape and curate their own online identities by designing and creating or revising a personal website (using Wordpress), LinkedIn Profile, and blog, and using Twitter and Instagram to build a following. Students will also work in teams to design social media campaigns for selected campus clubs and organizations, learning how to identify and create appropriate voice, tone, and content and how to use available software (including Hootsuite) to schedule posts that maximize outreach, and track performance.
